One of the major strengths of the new look facebook is the clean layout and the simplifying of the profile page so that when you click on a associates profile you immediately have access to their wall/news feed and can promptly see what they have been up to recently and send them a message directly.

Like My Space, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, Orkut and classmates ,facebook is also a social networking. While there are a number of social networking websites that focus on particular interests, there are others that do not. Facebook is”traditional” social networking websites and usually have open memberships. This means that anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies, beliefs, or views are. However, once you are inside this online community, you can create your own network of friends and eliminate members that do not share common interests or goals. The friends that you can make is just one of the many benefits of facebook as social networking. Other benefits includes diversity because it gives access to individuals from all around the world. This means that although you are in the Pakistan, you could develop an online friendship with someone in Denmark or India. Not only will you make new friends, but you just might learn a thing or two about new cultures or new languages and learning is always a good thing. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them.

There are dangers associated with facebook being a social networking including data theft and viruses, which are on the rise. The most prevalent danger though often involves online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Although danger does exist with networking online, it also exists with networking out in the real world, too.. By being aware of your cyber-surroundings and who you are talking to, you should be able to safely enjoy social networking online. It will take many phone conversations to get to know someone, but you really won’t be able to make a clear judgement until you can meet each other in person.  Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice; it will tell you when something doesn’t feel right about the online conversations taking place.

Porter’s five forces analysis:

The bargaining power of customers (buyers):

In case of Fecabook we can say that the bargaining power of buyers is high as there are other sites available which are in direct competition with facebook. Buyer switching costs are high relative to firm switching costs .

Buyer information availability is also very important. If the customers are satisfied with the information they are getting then it’s fine otherwise they can easily switch to other sites available.

Availability of existing substitute products is more so it’s easier for the facebook users to switch to other such websites.

Buyer volume/ customer base of facebook is also large so if the demands of the user’s are not met properly, they can go for other alternates available.

The bargaining power of suppliers:

The supplier’s power can also be higher in case of facebook as Supplier’s switching costs are high relative to facebook’s switching costs .

There is Degree of differentiation of inputs

We see that there is also Presence of substitute inputs

All these give the supplier ability to forward vertically integrate and cut out the buyer .

The threat of substitute products or services:

In case of Facebook customer’s have the propensity to substitute to other websites easily.

Buyer switching costs are high.

There is also a perceived level of product differentiation

Number of substitute products available in the market is large. Examples include: Friendster with more than 110 million members worldwide, Friendster is a leading global online social network, is focused on helping people stay in touch with friends and discover new people. Pownce is a way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. You’ll create a network of the people you know and then you can share stuff with all of them, just a few of them

The intensity of competitive rivalry:

For most industries, the intensity of competitive rivalry is the major determinant of the competitiveness of the industry.

Facebook should try achieving sustainable competitive advantage through innovation.

It should go for a powerful competitive strategy as there are number of direct and indirect competitors of it otherwise it will become difficult for facebook to have customer retention.

Competition between online and offline companies; click-and-mortar -v- brick-and-mortar.

The visibility of proprietary items on the Web.

The threat of the entry of new competitors:

Industry profitability; the more profitable the industry the more attractive it will be to new competitors .As there are a large number of direct and indirect competitors of Facebook which find the industry attractive the threat of entry of new competitors is high.

Customer loyalty to established brands plays a key role. Facebook can retain it’s customers base through innovation. The nore differentiated products the customers will get, their level of satisfaction will increase and they will find it hard to switch easily to some other site.

The most attractive segment is one in which entry barriers are high and exit barriers are low. Few new firms can enter and non-performing firms can exit easily. The entry barriers are low, many new websites performing the same as facebook can easily be formed. So the threat of entry of new entrants .
