When talking about computer and networking security threats, TCP/IP is at the forefront of it all. When TCP/IP was designed by ARPANET in 1983. The US Department of Defense made TCP/IP model the standard for all intercommunication networking and with it the IPv4 addressing. IPv4 would also lead to IPv6, which has yet to be adopted into the standard IP addressing. 

 Ever sense the progression of technology, TCP/IP has been the dominant networking protocol. The TCP/IP protocol suite has many applications which we use in our daily lives. These include email, terminal emulation, and file transfer. The TCP/IP model is also known for encapsulation and de-encapsulation, this allows for a layer of security on the packet being delivered.

  With the TCP/IP protocol suite being used sense the early 80’s there are what’s called legacy vulnerabilities. Although, there are a number of these vulnerabilities that are not an issue today but not all of them have went away. TCP/IP was originally designed to solve the challenge of getting information from point A to point B reliably and quickly. It was not designed with security in the forefront.

 In the internet of today, the creators of TCP/IP did not anticipate most of the issues facing the protocol suite. This is because TCP/IP is very susceptible to password sniffing attacks, so they used clear text and carried password information. And it is also susceptible to Denial of Service attacks.  One of the main tools to carry out these attacks were the r-utilities software. This allowed the person to use rlogin, rcp, rsh commands and with these commands the attacker could log into devices without needing to have a user be authenticated, to copy files, to issue commands on files.

 One of the first computer worms to hit the internet was called the Morris worm. The primary purpose of this worm was to figure out the size of the ARPANET. It did this by using vulnerabilities in sendmail, which is software that is used for routing email, as well as a toll called Finger, which showed what users were logged on to network devices. The problem with this particular worm is that a computer the got infected with it could be infected more then once. As the computers would get infected more than once, the machine would slow down more and more every time they infection spread. Eventually, the machine would run out of resources and become unserviceable. Once this worm was created and dealt with, it opened up the topic of TCP/IP security.

  There are four main protocols that are in use today: IP, TCP, UDP, and ICMP. These protocols primary functionality is composed of determining how packets should be formatted and segmented, connection control, routing control, and can be utilized to communicate information such as reachability. With all these protocols together, they create the network we know today. Having any vulnerability in any one of these protocols could work its way up the protocol stack. This makes the main TCP/IP sitting on the top of the stack vulnerable as well.

Voice over IP (VoIP) has taken over the traditional telephone wire approach to communication. The researchers in this article cover the concerns of VoIP and the issues related to its security. With most communication technology utilizing this method, securing this mode of communication has been a priority for most telecom companies. The articles goes into how to reduce packet losses and single routing techniques with bandwidth speeds and their very minimum.

Researches in this article have developed an attack graph which is a modeling tool for assessing the security of networks on an enterprise level. This is important due to the massive amounts of data and man hours to security these types of networks. In this article, the researchers state the need of automated attach graph generation and how it will help secure enterprise level networks.

This paper goes into detail about the algorithms used in the intrusion detection system (IDS). This system is used primary to detect anomalies in activity and compares with other IDS software. The researches go over the most common IDS and the techniques of all the different types of IDS. With this information, they are able to highlight current cyber security trends and able to predict where information technology is going.

This article covers mobile security for companies to be concerned about and the methods used to avoid a breach.
